FAMILY LITERACY – AN INVESTMENT FOR THE FUTURE

WE BELIEVE
the family that learns together, excels together -- beginning with the simple, joyful act of reading together.

Recognizing the power of families in establishing and perpetuating positive values, the Florida Family Literacy Initiative programs engage all members of the family. By participating in these programs, families share a passion for learning and help each other achieve.

THE FLORIDA FAMILY LITERACY INITIATIVE BEGAN IN 1999 and has become a national leader by funding family literacy programs and helping them stay successful though constant measurement and accountability.

Unlike programs that operate strictly as adult education or early childhood education, family literacy programs engage all members of the family, who keep each other motivated to learn. Enjoyable family reading time as part of this learning environment keeps families attending regularly, even after a long day at work, and provides a forum for them to help each other improve their reading skills.

OUR GOALS:
  • Help adults become workforce ready through classes that encompass reading, math, parenting skills, and GED instruction,
  • while helping children start school ready to excel,
  • and perpetuating lifelong learning as a family value to be passed on through the generations.
FOUR CORE COMPONENTS OF FAMILY LITERACY:
  • Adult Education – Reading, writing, math, workforce skills, English for speakers of other languages, and GED.
  • Early Childhood Education – Prepares children to enter school at or above grade level through age appropriate lessons and literacy activities.
  • Parenting Education – Life and parenting skills, child development, financial literacy and family reading strategies.
  • Parent and Child Together Time – A dedicated class where parents practice intergenerational learning activities.
