“As parents, the most important thing we can do is read to our children early and often.” - First Lady Laura Bush
Program Overview
In partnership with Just Read, Florida!, the Volunteer Florida Foundation presents the following research-based programs for students, parents and educators.
Families Building Better Readers (FBBR): FBBR is a dynamic reading workshop designed for parents and children in elementary grades. This workshop will teach parents how to set their children up for successful reading practice at home with ten research-based activities they can do with their children to improve reading performance. With a construction theme that adds an element of fun to the event for parents and children, each parent will receive a “tool kit” and “blueprint for success” that includes reading materials and activities to do within their own home.
Mysteries in the Middle (MnM): MnM is a dynamic reading workshop for middle school students and their parents. This engaging program includes a 2 ½ hour “Hollywood Sound Stage” theme where parents and students watch and take part in the mock filming of a made-for-TV pre-teen movie thriller entitled “Mysteries in the Middle.” By the end of the mystery-movie theme, both parents and students are “clued” in to a set of key reading and mental strategies that successful readers employ.
Section 1008.25, (7)(b)t.b., Florida Statutes, passed by the 2004 Legislature, provides that participation in FBBR is one of the options for supplemental services required of third grade students who scored Level I on the FCAT and have no good cause exemption from additional practice in reading. FBBR gives parents a no-cost, convenient option beyond before and after school tutoring or securing a tutor with specialized reading training.
