Bonita Spring, Fla. – Gov. Jeb Bush, President George H.W. Bush, and Mrs. Barbara Bush announced tonight that the 7th Annual Celebration of Reading has raised nearly $1.3 million for family literacy, with an additional in-kind support of nearly $1.5 million. The funds and in-kind support will go to the Florida Family Literacy Initiative, managed by nonprofit Volunteer Florida Foundation.
“I am grateful to our many Celebration of Reading sponsors tonight who have together donated tremendous financial and in-kind support for our family literacy initiative in the coming year. This will go a long way in helping families achieve better lives through education,” said Gov. Gov. Bush, President George H.W. Bush, Mrs. Barbara Bush, Mrs. Columba Bush and Doro Bush Koch joined internationally acclaimed artist Britto in unveiling an original oil painting for the Florida Family Literacy Initiative, just prior to the Celebration of Reading event at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa in Bonita Springs. The Britto painting will be offered for sale by private invitation through Volunteer Florida Foundation. The Foundation also is offering limited edition prints of the art. Proceeds will benefit family literacy in Florida, and will help fund a new curriculum that weaves together art and literacy for preschoolers that can be used with their parents in family literacy programs.
The Celebration of Reading event was hosted by the Bush family. Best-selling authors Eric Carle, Haven Kimmel and Doro Bush Koch read to an audience of nearly 700 sponsors and guests.
