Alliance for Families with Deaf Children Family Literacy Academy Serving parents of deaf children in the greater Ft. Lauderdale area and in St. Petersburg The Alliance for Families with Deaf Children Family Literacy Academy serves approximately 60 families with a deaf or hard of hearing child or parent in Broward County and St. Petersburg in order to facilitate language, literacy, and fully accessible communication. Program services include home visits, child literacy instruction, parent education, parent literacy instruction in American Sign Language, parent support groups, and Parent and Child Together activities. Apopka Grows Family Literacy Academy Serving Hispanic families in the Apopka area The Grows Family Literacy Academy is consistently ranked as one of the top-performing family literacy programs in the state. The Grows Family Literacy Academy served as the site for the development of our integrated curriculum approach, and teaching techniques used by the Academy have been studied by University of Florida researchers. Barry University’s Family Literacy Academy Serving migrant and farm worker families in the Homestead area The program places emphasis on school readiness for Pre-K children and elementary school age children by providing developmentally appropriate activities such as pre-literacy activities and motor skills attainment. Educational outcomes are measured based on age and grade level appropriateness. The adult literacy component emphasizes literacy, ESL instruction and ILA activities. Calhoun Library’s Family Literacy Academy Serving rural north Florida families in Blountstown and surrounding areas The Calhoun Library Family Literacy Academy is noted for its longevity of staff supporting family literacy. For over 10-years this team has reached out to very needy families living in Calhoun and neighboring counties. They are innovators in the use of technology and committed to serving this sparsely populated area. Jump Start Family Literacy Academy Serving migrant farm worker families in the Collier County Housing Authority system, and their neighbors The Jump Start Family Literacy Academy has grown by leaps and bounds. Over the past few years they have expanded from one site to three. While the settings are in need to major renovation, Jump Start is proud of their expansion and still faces a waiting list of families interested in enrolling in the program. Learning Together Family Literacy Academy Serving DeSoto County families. The Learning Together Family Literacy Academy serves families in the rural DeSoto County area. Many families are still recovering from the hurricanes that hit this area in 2004. The FLASH at Finlay Family Literacy Academy Serving families whose children attend Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Elementary School or EWF Stirrup Elementary in Miami An intergenerational approach is utilized with culturally relevant curricula and strategies specifically designed for linguistically diverse parents. While in the program, families participate in intensive cycles of 120-140 hours of instruction and intergenerational literacy activities. Hispanic Unity’s Family Literacy Academy Serving primarily Hispanic families in Hollywood and neighboring cities in Broward County The program is a fundamental building block towards empowering immigrant children and families to succeed in the United States. The program focuses on reading skills for the entire family. Lakeland Teen Parent Family Literacy Academy Serving pregnant and parenting students, grades 6-12 and their children This unique academy integrates adult literacy, children’s literacy, parent education, and serves parents and their children through five years of age. Parents and their children attend a 30-hour program weekly. Lake Wales Charter Schools Family Literacy Academy Serving families in Lake Wales and surrounding areas Our four component program supports families with services that remove educational barriers and maintain a literacy focus for the entire family. Volunteer mentors/tutors work closely with families to meet their goals. In addition, current enrollees mentor and support new families. The program is supported by a 65 member community based Family Literacy Coalition. St. John’s Family Literacy Academy Serving families in the greater Tampa area St. John’s Family Literacy Academy aims to break the cycle of illiteracy by providing families the literacy skills necessary to function in society and pursue higher education or job attainment. The program prepares parents to actively participate in their children’s education and strengthens the parent and child relationship. Parent Power Family Literacy Academy Serving families in the downtown Palm Beach area In collaboration with the Palm Beach Education Foundation, we’ve opened the newest program in the Florida Family Literacy Academy family, and the Academy is already serving a full class of families with more on the waiting list. |
