The Alliance for Families with Deaf Children Family Literacy Academy serves approximately 60 families with a deaf or hard of hearing child or parent in Broward County and St. Petersburg in order to facilitate language, literacy, and fully accessible communication. Program services include home visits, child literacy instruction, parent education, parent literacy instruction in American Sign Language, parent support groups, and Parent and Child Together activities.

The program places emphasis on school readiness for Pre-K children and elementary school age children by providing developmentally appropriate activities such as pre-literacy activities and motor skills attainment. The Jump Start Family Literacy Academy has grown by leaps and bounds. Over the past few years they have expanded from one site to three. While the settings are in need to major renovation, Jump Start is proud of their expansion and still faces a waiting list of families interested in enrolling in the program.

This unique academy integrates adult literacy, children’s literacy, parent education, and serves parents and their children through five years of age. Parents and their children attend a 30-hour program weekly.
